NCDHP ACTION ALERT FOR HCOP and COE PROGRAMS!!!

On September 21, the Senate Appropriations Commitee passed its Labor-Health and Human Services, and Education (L-HHS) FY 2012 bill. This appropriations bill funds the federal government programs related to health care, including the Title VII health professions training programs. In this bill, funding for the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) was eliminated. HCOP is a pipeline program that seeks to increase the number of individuals from minority and disadvantaged backgrounds that enroll in and graduate from health profession schools. The committee's rationale for eliminating HCOP was that the wait list for health professions training programs was full. However, the reality is that minorites and underserved individuals are extremely under-represented in the health professions.

On September 29, the House Appropriations Committee released its draft L-HHS FY 2012 bill. This draft bill would propse a drastic 50% cut in the Minority Centers of Excellence (COE) program, and elimination of HCOP.

Eventually, and possibly soon, the House and Senate must come together to reconcile any differences and produce a bill which can be enacted and fund the federal government. For more information: COE%20HCOP%20and%20SDS%20action%20alert%5B1%5D.pdf
